It seems everybody is saying with the President’s action Americans will interact with Cubans and acquaint them with the wonders of democracy and this will ultimately change Cuba from dictatorship to freedom. Maryland congressman Chris Van Hollen put it this way, “More travel, more trade, and more communication between the United States and Cuba will expose Cuba to the benefits of the free exchange of goods and ideas. Those in Cuba who want to limit individual freedom may fear this, but Americans, and those who want to expand freedom, should welcome it.” Sen. Rand Paul added “I support engagement, diplomacy, and trade with Cuba, China, Vietnam, and many countries with less than stellar human rights records, because I believe that once enslaved people taste freedom and see the products of capitalism they will become hungry for freedom themselves.” Really! Haven’t good free people from say Canada or Sweden among others been visiting, investing and interacting with Cubans for decades? Cuba except for the U.S. has relations with virtually every nation on the Globe. Next to the Dominican Republic, Cuba has the most tourists in the Caribbean. Most of them from free countries. In recent years thousands of Americans joined them on “cultural” visits. None of this has lead to increased freedom in Cuba. Cuba has more political prisoners today than ever before. It’s a myth that Cuba has been walled off by our embargo and if we just open the door a little freedom will ring. There may be good arguments for changing our relationship with Cuba, but this isn’t one of them. Please stop insulting our intelligence.
